Introduction
Not every tree removal job is straightforward – sometimes a tough location can turn a standard job into a difficult one. This project at a local Lancashire fishery was one of those jobs that should have been simple, but the difficulty of the space made an easy job into a tough one. The two decaying beech trees were right on the edge of the water, making it very difficult for our team to manoeuvre safely. Luckily, with some thorough preparation and expert skill, our team managed to remove these dangerous trees without incident.
The Challenge
Beech trees are some of the larger varieties of deciduous trees you’ll find in the British countryside, and whilst common, they often grow to significant sizes with considerable canopies that make them difficult to dismantle. These specimens were large, mature trees that needed to be carefully taken apart in segments. To add to the difficulty, the trees sat right at the edge of the fishery lake and were completely backed by water, effectively halving the available room our team had to work. The presence of water also meant there was a risk of electric shock from our equipment, meaning we had to be cautious where we were placing our vital machinery and electrical equipment needed to get the job done.
Our Approach
Before we could start any work, our team carried out a full assessment of the site. We considered the trees’ structure, the proximity to the water and the best access routes for equipment. This careful planning is important to ensure our jobs are completed smoothly and safely.
Another key aspect of dismantling these trees safely was the use of rigging ropes that would allow us to lower each section of the tree carefully in segments working from the top down, rather than risking uncontrolled falling branches. This is why the planning stage was so important for this job, as it helped us determine the right placement for the rigging ropes and minimise the risk of injury. Rigging is a standard practice in tree surgery, especially for large trees that need to be dismantled in segments, as uncontrolled, heavy branches falling from a height can pose a serious risk to people or property below.
We also used a Först woodchipper, positioned at a safe distance from both the trees and the water. This allowed us to quickly mulch any smaller branches and keep the working area clear throughout the job. Keeping the site clear and organised helps to prevent accidents and makes work easier and smoother.
Work Carried Out
Working from the top of the trees downwards, a specially trained climber systematically removed the canopy first, using the rigging to lower large branches in manageable sections. Once the canopy was cleared, we were able to access the trunk to dismantle it in stages.
Whilst we would always prefer to preserve trees wherever possible, the cross-section images of the remaining tree stump show the internal condition of the timber with signs of discolouration and decay. Because trees can decay internally from the heartwood, this isn’t always visible to untrained eyes from the outside of the tree. This is where a professional opinion is important, as a tree can appear healthy outside whilst deteriorating inside.
Working in Challenging Environments
Some of the most satisfying jobs we do are the ones that look simple in the photographs but involved a lot of careful planning behind the scenes.
The tight space next to open water made this job more of a challenge, but thanks to our years of experience, we were able to handle it without incident. Our team’s NPTC qualifications, experience in aerial tree work, and expertise in rigging and controlled dismantling meant we could take on this project with confidence.
An additional measure that allows us to tackle these difficult jobs confidently is the fact that our team are fully insured. Fully insured tree surgery means that if anything unexpected happens on a complex job, everyone involved is protected. For commercial clients like fisheries, estates, and land managers, it gives additional peace of mind.
